Captain's Blog: Tales and Good Eats from our Back Deck to Yours

Going out to Sea

As the Sword leaves the breakwater and drops her stabilizers, we consider our options. Fishing close to town means that we will need to compete with the rest of the fleet.

Fishing further out means there will be heavy weather and added risk to the boat and crew. I came of age in Alaska and I have come to love its wild freedoms. The open ocean draws us out of cell service and away from the competition. Finding a school of salmon without another boat in sight is our ultimate challenge.

No peaches at the helm!

No peaches at the helm!
Fishing is humbling.  Like the time my mother-in-law screamed, “Are we sinking?” The Sword keeled over as I accidentally drove up one side of a rock and down the other.  Very vividly, I can remember answering “I don’t know!” as she instinctively bundled our eight month old baby Ivy into warm clothes.  It was Ivy’s first time to eat canned peaches and she had been too precious for me not to hold. Luckily, the Sword sustained very little damage and now we have a “No peaches at the helm rule!”

Alaskan Salmon Marsala

Season Alaska Salmon fillets with salt and pepper, to taste.  Place the flour on a plate, season with salt and pepper, to taste.  Dredge both sides of each salmon fillet in the seasoned flour, shaking off the excess flour.
